Description
Here's the "Empress of the Blues," BESSIE SMITH, in her very first record, "DOWN HEARTED BLUES" and "GULF COAST BLUES." Despite that by 1923, Bessie came late to the blues boom (Mamie Smith - no relation - started it in 1920), and that these songs had already been widely covered, Bessie's amazing voice created a sensation. She zoomed to the top of the heap and STAYED there! She's accompanied by CLARENCE WILLIAMS at the piano.
This original 1923 Columbia A3844 is in nice E- condition. A deep, half-inch scratch on "Gulf Coast" ticks for about twenty seconds.
