Description
You can understand the cult following of these guys; for sophistication and subtlety go elsewhere but if raw energy and enthusiasm are your thing then you've come to the right place. This outpunks Punk long before we knew what it was! Some wag came up with the pun title which is more apt then they probably realised at the time.......or perhaps they did?
This then is the original 1966 Columbia LP with the blue and black labels with 'sold in the UK' text etc.
The EJ Day & Co cover has a laminated front and flipbacks for which this arrangement has protected the spine these last 51 years! Made of medium card, the cover is structurally sound with no seam splits, rips, tears or price sticker residue and the mouth is not too bad either. The corner bottom edges show wear and there is creasing on the laminate (common due to age shrinkage) and ringwear. And because the rear has a matt finish it has picked up grubbiness over the decades as the photo shows. There is one obvious blemish which is the pen written asterix at Side One, Track 1. In summary, the cover has integrity but is aged. As such I'd rate it 6.5/10 for condition.
Evidence of a handful of plays at the record label spindle holes and the holes are pretty tight as you can see. The labels are in nice order and the machine etched matrix numbers on the run-offs are XAX 3022-1 and XAX 3023-1 respectively.
The disc itself is of medium weight, flat and shiny. I wiped the surface dust off with a damp tissue and gave it the once over. As ever by window light it looks fine. But beneath the evil desk light my impression is of a record that has not been played too much but subject to some poor handling in use. Has the usual scuffs which is generally as a result of the vinyl living in its' sleeve for the past 50 odd years plus some light marks. Side one, track 1 and side two, track three have short needle marks so I had to do a playtest to check out the situation (Linn deck, Naim system). To me there is no significant effect on the quality of the vinyl as it plays rather well. But should the successful bidder disagree with my judgement then of course I will resolve any problem. So for the vinyl I rate it 6.5/10 also, more for the visual condition than the aural.
