Description
Here is a great chance to acquire at a bargain price a much coveted acid-folk-psych LP that is now commanding several hundred pounds in top condition. This is a scarce original UK stereo copy of Heavy Petting by Dr Strangely Strange on Vertigo (6360 009) from 1970. It is a magnificent LP featuring some terrific guitar by a teenage Gary Moore. And here's a chance to bag an original swirl copy at a budget price to fill that gap in your collection until you find a better example.
So what's wrong with this one then? Well, the complex Roger Dean die-cut cover constructed to stand alone like a shrine while the vinyl revolves on your turntable can still stand on its own two feet, as you can see in my pictures, but it suffers from four or five tears (one taped - see photo), a couple of tiny sticker tears, some light creasing and edgewear, although the cut-out holes are still fine and nothing is missing. Although I haven't seen many of these sleeves but I have seen far worse - they are very vulnerable in all their intricacy. However, on account of the flaws highlighted above, this sleeve only grades Fair (Record Collector grading).
The original large swirl Vertigo disc also only grades Fair. There is a small handwritten female christian name on one label while both sides of the vinyl show plentiful marks. This disc plays, as you would expect, with some background noise and the odd click but it plays all the way through with no jumps or skips - a playable stopgap copy. And the music is superlative - particularly the Pearls Before Swine-meets-the Incredible String Band of the dreamily eerie side one closer, Sign on my Mind, with its melancholic whistle and extended Gary Moore guitar solo.
So in conclusion, please don't expect too much - if you are looking for an excellent copy you need to look elsewhere.
