DRAGON - DRAGON - PROG ROCK - NEW/SEALED

A1 Introduction (Insects) A2 Lucifer A3 Leave Me With Tears B1 Gone In The Wind B2 In The Blue B3 Crystal Ball
Dragon morphed out of the Alt-based cover band Burning Light. Burning light was formed in the early-'70s by brothers Jean and Geroges Venaise. Jean handled vocals and lead guitar, while Georges served as drummer and flutist. By the mid-70s the line-up featured the Venarse brothers, along with
guitarist Bernard Callaert, and bassist Jean-Pierre Houx. Moving away from their cover band roots, the band began focusing on original material (largely written by Jean) and began to make popular inroads playing clubs and various Belgian music festivals.

In 1976 the band added former Lagger Blues Machine keyboardist Christian Duponcheel to the line-up. The band then began looking for a recording contract, but unable to interest a major label, ended up going the self-financing route, recording material at the newly opened Acorn Studios in the UK.

During the recording session the band decided on a name change; ditching Burning Light for what was viewed as the more international sounding Dragon. Not sure I see the point, but so what ... Reflecting material drawn from their live repertoire, 1976's "Dragon" was reportedly completed in a mere five days. That was an even more amazing accomplishment for a group that had never recorded before. Most references label the LP a progressive outing. That's an accurate description, but only to a certain degree. In fact anyone expecting to hear something along the lines of Genesis, or Yes, or even some of their Belgian competitors was probably going to be surprised by how mainstream and commercial supposed progressive tunes like the opening instrumental 'Introduction (Insects)' and '' were. Elsewhere, 'Gone with the Wind' was a mainstream rocker, while 'In the Blue' showed the band were capable of delving into psych. The majority of the set was devoted to instrumentals, but there were a couple of vocal performances ('Lucifer' and '') with Jean Venais handling the lyrics in English.
