Are Brains Necessary? Presented by Professor John Lorber

A feature on how people with a feature on how people with little or no brain tissue function as normal. Is life without a brain unthinkable? Without our full complement of that upper layer of the brain, the cerebral cortex, we can't function as normal human. Or can we? According to Professor John Lorber of Sheffield Children's Hospital, amazingly the answer is, we can! Treating hydrocephalus, water on the brain, he's discovered many cases where the sheer pressure of excess burl fluid in the patient's skull has apparently crushed the brain out of existence. Yet many of his patients are of normal intelligence, and some are exceptionally to clever - including one with an I.Q. of 126 and a first-class honours degree in

mathematics.

In this programme Professor Lorber describes his remarkable findings and discusses the implications of his discovery with Noel Dilly, Professor of Structural Biology at St George's Hospital Medical School, London.

Dreams - Leslie Smith

An introduction to the science and psychology of the world of dreams

A third, or even more of our three score years and ten is spent in sleep, perhaps for example, sleep in order to dream? Why in dreams. Why? Do we, then do some people apparently never dream? Are dreams simply random bits of nonsense? Or do they have a significance we should heed? From the analyst's couch to the sleep research laboratory, this programme looks for the Research into sleep deprivation and dreaming and non-dreaming sleep

answers. Research into sleep deprivation and dreaming and non-dreaming sleep is bringing the techniques of modern science to bear on a subject that was once the province of classical Freudian and Jungian psychoanalysis.

Leslie Smith looks at how this modern research is colouring our traditional views of the nightlife of the mind, and introduces some of the people whose work takes them into the world of dreams.

About BBC Transcription Services.

BBC Transcription Services discs were only made available to overseas radio stations for broadcast purposes and were not made available for sale to the general public. However, in the early 90s many international BBC libraries sold their stock to the public.

Typically BBC Transcription Services pressed 100 copies of each disc only with instructions to the overseas radio network to destroy the disc at the end of the licence period.

Mint (M) - The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

Excellent (Ex) - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good + (VG+) - The record has obviously been played but has only a few light surface marks. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects is acceptable
