Duane Allman's greatness was apparent on his recordings with the Allman Brothers, yet there was another side to the superb guitarist. For many years, he was a highly respected session musician, playing on cuts by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie, and Clarence Carter, among others. By including those session cuts, as well as a sampling of his brief sojourn in Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes and a few rare solo tracks, along with a number of representative Allman Brothers songs, the double-album Anthology winds up drawing a complete portrait of Allman. He may have recorded plenty of other material worth hearing, but this has the bare essentials for an excellent introduction and retrospective.

Duane Allman was - and, as far as we are concerned still is  - the only white blues guitar player who could compete with Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitar player ever. While we gracefully acknowledge contributions of many great fret-masters to the genre (people such as Ry Cooder, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Harvey Mandel, Arthur Lee and others), we believe there was only one (and one only) Duane Allman.

Starting in 1966, at first as a session musician and then as a solo artist and a part of The Allman Brothers Band, Duane established a brief, but extremely productive, working relationship with Jerry Wexler and Atlantic records. During the short period of fame and fortune he enjoyed before his untimely demise in 1971, Duane starred as a studio musician on practically every worthwhile Atlantic recording session. Some of the most important recordings of the 20th Century prominently feature Duane Allman on guitar, as a session musician. Whether it was Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Eric Clapton, Delaney and Bonnie, BB King, John Hammond, Jr., Arthur Conley, Allman Brothers Band, King Curtis, Dr. John, Bozz Scaggs,  Sam Samudio (a/k/a Sam the Sham) and many tens - if not hundreds - of other ATCO/Atlantic artists, it was always a gentle, delicate Duane Allman's guitar - usually slide guitar, his trademark instrument - that could easily be detected in the background.

This, then, is truly one of the best pieces of white blues we can think of, and a critical piece in any self-respected Allman Brothers Band collection.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
