AUGUSTUS PABLO "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" (Trident Studios)
I mastered this for Island Records in London during 1974/5 + this is the only dubplate made at the time of the original release.
Obviously, one of the best dubs of all time. This is a one-sided dubplate cut at Trident Mastering Studios in London in 1974. I worked for Island and mastered many reggae records for the company. The engineer on the session was Ray Staff and his assistant was Howard Thompson.
Ray Staff experimented with various limiting and eq to see if some of the more dynamic parts of the recording could be contained. (like the exploding snare fills.) He was concerned the 45 might skip when played. Those suggestions made the record sound more tame, so we cut it flat. Meaning, no eq or anything else was used. We mastered it exactly the way KING TUBBY mixed it. Seemed like the proper thing to do.
I later learned Carlie Barrett from The Wailers was the drummer on the session.
The sound clip is taken from the dubplate + the dubplate has been played less than 5 times ever. Condition of wax is NEW MINT and over time the paper on the label has aged, as seen in pic.
