~ condition ~


record is in Excellent - Condition & has been
been fully play tested and it sounds great & plays
without any skips, repeats or bad noise other than
some spots on side B where the high trumpet notes
are briefly a little distorted here and there and
the vinyl is shiny & clean with very littl wear

cover is in Very Good Condition with bold bright
printing with intact seams & no writing or markings
but does have some corner & edgewear including
evidence of the top & bottom seams having once
been taped, but the tape is no longer present but
there are a few spots where the printing is peeled
and also where there is light tape residue & the top
seam does have a neat archival repair that was done
from the inside & only seen upon close inspection
and there is also a small round white sticker on
the front that could possibly be removed

displays well & plays nicely

these later examples from 1958-1959 feature
Johnny Hodges backed by both Ellington and the
great Billy Strayhorn on piano and such non-Ellington
luminaries as Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, "Sweets" Edison
and Jo Jones. Like its companion album Back to Back
Side by Side has a loose jam session feel with all the
soloists stretching out. Hodges is in top form throughout
while Edison and Webster man their spots just fine
and highlights include the sveltely swinging "Going Up"
and Hodges' bluesy closer "You Need to Rock" making
this a must for fans of vintage combo swing jazz
