"BLACK, BROWN, AND BEIGE" made its first premier in 1943, but was received with lukewarm reviews by critics who really didn't know what to make of such an ambitious program that incorporated classical, blues, and gospel music into a supple jazz mix. So Ellington decided to stash it away and would only perform the score in piecemeal over the next fifteen years until he felt that his original conception was suitably perfected (thus eventually releasing it on Columbia Records in 1958). The result is not only a seminal landmark of jazz history, but is quite simply one of the greatest works of art to ever come out of the American experience. It is a monument that has helped to define the internal soul of every black, brown, and beige man, woman, and child living in this country (not just at that time: but for ALL time). The six parts which make up the whole composition can be divided into those three musical catagories of classical ("Part II" and the "Part V" interlude), gospel/blues (Mahalia Jackson's immaculate singing of "Come Sunday" on "Part IV" and "The Lord's Prayer" on "Part VI"), and jazz (the bold, stately "Work Theme" of "Part I" and the harder swing featured on "Part III") with overlapping between them all. The love, humanity, and beauty of Duke's inspiration could only have come from God. And in its own modest way this is as vitally important a record as Coltrane's "A LOVE SUPREME" or Miles Davis' "KIND OF BLUE" or "BITCHES BREW" when it comes to pushing the boundaries of popular music. This record came from a collection that is every collector’s dream to find and I was fortunate to be in the right place to purchase about 25 records from it. It was like the dream that you find a storage room with records that had been untouched since the early 1970’s and contained hundreds of records purchased from the early 1960’s to the early 1970’s and most of them were still sealed with an original price sticker with a date and price on them. Some had been opened but still had the shrink wrap and appear unplayed, some had been opened and shrink removed and the original owner had neatly written his initial in big print but the records appear like new otherwise … a great day for finding records !
ATTN US BUYERS: REGARDING SHIPPING. I am shipping from Hawaii. I stopped offering media mail on packages under 1 lb. because the eBay, Paypal, and USPS estimated time for delivery is incorrect on all my listings: it ignores a sea journey and I don't want to mislead customers. With the new rates I can ship 1st Class (3-5 days) for about the same cost as media mail. Shipping time for media mail from Hawaii can be 3-5 weeks. Packages over 1 lb. have to ship either media mail or Priority Mail (most single LPs are under 1 lb except gatefold and heavy vinyl).

NM - Like New, no visible signs of wear, no spindle marks.
EX - Almost like new, may have very light spindle marks or very minor scuffs. Cover may have very light ringwear or minor dings.
VG - Not bad, may have light scratches or marks on cover.

Please be aware that Media Mail from Hawaii to the mainland can take 3-5 weeks (not 4-11 days as it says in eBay and Paypal's prefilled shipping menu) versus 3-5 days for priority and 1st Class mail.
All US shipments include USPS tracking number. Optional Tracking for International shipments available with Registered Mail* ($13.95 extra) or Priority Mail International, which is expensive - send a message if you require international tracking and I will update the invoice.
Insurance available on request at USPS rate.
Combined Shipping available - charge calculated by weight of the package.
note: the pricing between 1st Class Mail (under 16 Ounces) and Priority Mail (over 16 ounces) are not proportionate so combing a shipment of a single LP to the USA may not save money unless shipped media mail - if you want to purchase more than one single LP contact me for the shipping options.
