Description
Here's a rare label: DUOPHONE. It was a short-lived (1925-1930) British attempt to make a lightweight, durable, cheap record. The attempt was successful, as many of them survive today, though with time, they break down chemically. However, the one on offer here is a "solid" Duophone, pressed on ordinary shellac. Much material on Duophone was recorded especially for them in the United States, by dance bands under contract to Brunswick. The Dupohones, therefore, are all originals.
Side A, THE MELODY MAKERS doing "JUST A NIGHT FOR MEDITATION," is actually William F. Wirges' Orchestra, recorded in Chicago.
Side B, VICTORIAN SYNCOPATORS doing "MARY ANN," is really Harry Reser and his Orchestra, recorded in New York. I like the cognitive dissonance that arises when I contemplate the words "Victorian Syncopators." I always thought of Victorians as stodgy, "Nearer My God To Thee" types.
This original all-shellac English Duophone D.4014 is in E- condition. A few scratches, not much wear.
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
