About Duran Duran debut album Portuguese releases
“The first album released in Portugal by Duran Duran was for many weeks a “sleeper” apparently destined to flop, but a major promotional campaign by Valentim de Carvalho, EMI licensee in Portugal, create national interest and it soon topped the LP chart. The group visited Portugal to make live appearances on the top Sunday television show “O Passeio dos Alegres” run by leading disk jockey Julio Isidro. Another key factor in breaking the group in Portugal was an outstanding video clip built around the “Girls on Film” track and this title topped the single chart, too” (Bilboard Magazine, 1982)
“The Duran Duran phenomenon in Portugal was very strong. In fact “Planet Heart” reach #1 on charts, when in UK charts this singles had only reached the #12 position. Many times I heard on EMI international meetings that the Duran Duran portuguese success showed them that Duran Duran was not an English phenomenon only. Released in 1981, the Duran Duran debut album sold 70,000 records in Portugal, and it didn’t sold more because several times we didn’t have more copies in stock, and during 1981 and 1982 we were consecutively forced to make new records to be released to the market. Only in 1982 their debut album reached the #1 Portuguese chart position (in 1981 it reached only #2) and its Portuguese Gold Record Award (for sales over 50,000) was reached only in 1982 too.” (David Ferreira, editor chief of Valentim de Carvalho in the eighties, interview published in 2010 by DN magazine).
Yes, it’s true. The unexpected, gradual (and long) increase of the success of the Duran Duran’s debut album in Portugal, forced Valentim de Carvalho, EMI licensee in Portugal, to consecutively make new editions to be released during 1981 & 1982 to the Portuguese insatiable market . This fact, permits that today we can distinguish several different 1981/82’s Portuguese releases or releases variations of this album, which constitutes a pleasant universe for any record collector or Duran Duran fan.
We can identify the following FIVE Portuguese releases:
* 1st release - catalog: 11C 076-64382 / 1st matrix press / price code “DB” - [Jul/Set-1981]
* 2nd release - catalog: 11C 076-64382 / 1st matrix press / price code “G” - [Set/Dec-1981]
* 3rd release - catalog: 11C 076-64382 / 2nd matrix press// price code “G” - [December 1981 - 1982]
* "Círculo dos Leitores" Special Club 1st Edition - catalog: CL015 - [December 1981 - 1982]
"Círculo dos Leitores" Special Club “DD” Edition - catalog: CL015 - code: “DD” - [December 1981 - 1982]
For each of this releases we can identify some label or sleeve variations - these variations were resulted from slight different labels and sleeves that were needed to be reprinted for each new portion of records subsequently produced to refill the empty stocks.
About “price codes” - All albums released by Valentim de Carvalho's have a "price code" printed on the sleeve and sometimes on the inner sleeve too. Usually, this price code is one or two alphabetic characters, printed on the back cover inside a small circle. Because in the 70’s and the 80’s the price code were constantly changed, these price code are very helpful to date when each specific record was released to the market – in this case, we know that in SET-OUT/ 1981 “DB” was replaced by “G” price code.
About Portuguese pressings: Portuguese records market was a small market and usually a low number of copies were made for each release. Knowing that up to 36,000 records can be manufactured from just one lacquer, we can understand that the same lacquer / matrix set could be used in several subsequently releases – and in this case, the 2nd press / lacquer starts to be used on Dec/81 only.
In the following table you can find the specific details of each Portuguese release or release variations I have identified until now:
