Label/Format: Philips – intense black, matt finished with smooth surfaces. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in stunning clean and fresh condition. Two or three tiny, faint spindle marks, side two has barely any at all. This is the way collectors want their mono records, hardly played and looking and sounding magnificent.

Cat Number: BL 7820.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. An impressive, but not untypical weight for this era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: a very early pressed copy that looks and plays superbly. Without doubt, hardly played and then with the utmost care. This has more than survived the Dansette era with hardly any surface blemishes to two super-shiny playing surfaces. The important factor, this legendary woman’s voice still sounds as magnificent on this record as it did way back into the 1960s.

Brief Info: The third album by one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1967, ‘The Summer of Love’ with psychedelia encompassing the pop world – note the superb psych-style artwork on the cover front for the title. This powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. This national treasure can be heard to absolute maximum pleasure from this stunningly preserved mono record, the format of the era. Very difficult to find like this, the wonderful vocals are often ruined by heavy tracking equipment of the day or was simply played to destruction. Far more unusual to find the popular albums that have clearly hardly been played, still offering top quality sound and this one really delivers. From beginning to end, all is focused, sharp, practically noise-free and devoid of pops or clicks. This too being played on a highly revealing system for which this record was never really designed. The cover is simply gorgeous and transports you directly back to the greatest year in music bar none. The front retains it’s W.H. Smith pre-decimal ‘sale’ price sticker, this in equally superb condition and never tampered with or picked at. The original asking price being 37/6 (that is approx £1.87 in current decimal money), then reduced to 15/11 (approx 84p). I like pre-decimal price stickers as they help date the album. Remember decimal money replaced LSD in 1971. This sticker, I am certain will easily remove if desired as the front is laminated, but I feel it’s an important part of it’s history – just an opinion of course. For fans of this wonderful lady, this must not be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Lamination & Front: A superb front that encaptures those times perfectly and it will rarely be found better. I love that psych-style title graphic in typically loud, vivid colour. The laminate is ultra clear, fresh and shiny with barely even a trace of friction rubs or dulling and no record rim impressions. All fully adhered for maximum visual pleasure with a stunning whiteness retained with out even a hint of grubbiness or toning. Creasing? what creasing?, any traces are barely worthy of mention and even the right exposed strip on the opening edge is pure white and unburred. This cover takes you directly back to those record shop racks of the 1960s.

Cover Back: The back is equally stunning, ultra clean and fresh and devoid of the usual darkening, grubbiness, any marks are tiny, ultra faint and barely any. No ringwear, creasing, bar bottom corner tips and the flipbacks little short of immaculate. Any end burr traces are tiny and all are grime-line free with no lifting or creasing. A cover for the 1960s connoisseur issued smack in the middle of the psych era.

Top Edge: Unworn and dead smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edge: As above with one tiny surface chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Any thickening is very mild. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of as-made: solid, straight with any compression mild. All text is perfect under the solid uncracked laminate that again is ultra smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs at all.

Corners: Small tip creases but hardly any real wear and all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this colourful mono cover, one that will prove very immensely difficult to find better. This lovely Dusty cover should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain polylined inner that has barely any real wear at all, just mildly darkened with age. Two very neat window circles – one small tear has been repaired by myself and now looks like a small crease, that being the only damage on this ultra neat inner. The lining secure and very clear with barely any crinkle. In fact there is barely a crease to be seen and all the edges are unsplit with no repairs to any of them. This is date coded 107 (October 1967), exactly the month and year this album was issued, definitive proof this is the original inner and how early this copy is.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a beautiful fresh and shiny record, any surface marks are small, few and faint and how many popular mono records this great age will not have some?, let’s be honest. The lack of penetrating scratches is the really important factor along with no groovewear – that the invisible menace of the mono record. A lovely visual copy that is super clean, intense black and very solidly pressed. The evidence of the spindle marks on the labels suggests hardly even played, and likely so, but this is never definitive, it’s the sound that counts. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. I do realise what a bold statement this is, this too on a challenging record with an iconic voice and strong backing. All the ingredients for distortion and clipping, but none here. This has precise, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, with barely any noticed at all and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played carefully and not subjected to a worn stylus. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Even the innermost songs track and sound sharp, here where the tracking angle is at it’s most critical, so many, even well looked after copies, can be let down here, not this one. And how many will offer no pops and clicks?, remember just one jolt or arm-drop on a Dansette, a vintage mono record player so popular at this time – and there’s another furrow or crater inflicted and another classic written-off. These machines tracked with massive downforce – hence so many monos are worn out or severely scratched (and sometimes stereo ones too). This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
