Review: It is a splendid performance... The work's colour is set by the orchestra's lower strings which open both outer movements and Karajan cajoles the most beautiful sound from the Viennese players. Another favorite moment is in the Adagio when, after some beguiling chugs from the horns the woodwind set off with their tune, which is deliciously decorated by the violins. Here this section is pure magic and if later, in the trio of the Scherzo, Karajan indulges himself with a touch of 'kitsch' on the string portamenti, the performance generally has plenty of impulse and excitement. – Gramophone
