If you’ve landed on "Lady of Mars," you’ve found the crown jewel of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) melodic wing. While many of their 1980s peers were trying to out-speed Motörhead or out-grit Iron Maiden, Birmingham’s Dark Star was busy crafting one of the most atmospheric and enduring anthems of the era.
Formed in 1978 out of the ashes of the band Suicide, Dark Star consisted of Rik Staines (vocals), Dave Harrison (guitar), Bob Key (guitar), Mark Oseland (bass), and Steve Atkins (drums). "Lady of Mars" first gained massive underground traction in 1980 when it was featured on the legendary compilation Metal for Muthas Volume II. The track was so well-received that it led to a deal with Avatar Records and the release of their 1981 self-titled debut album.
The song itself is a masterclass in "Space-Metal" sophistication. It features a driving, UFO-inspired bassline, soaring twin-guitar harmonies, and a cosmic, synthesizer-laden atmosphere that set them apart from the era's more primitive acts. It’s often cited as the bridge between 70s space-rock (like Hawkwind or Wishbone Ash) and the polished heavy metal that would dominate the mid-80s.
As of 2026, the track remains a high-value target for vinyl collectors, with original 7" copies on Steel Strike or Avatar regularly fetching premium prices on the collector's market. Interestingly, 2026 has seen a surge of interest in the "Dark Star" name due to a new, unrelated alternative rock band called Lady of Mars rising out of the UK indie scene—but for the true metalhead, the Birmingham original remains the definitive version. While the original lineup hasn't performed together in years, the song is a staple of "NWOBHM" specialty radio and remains the gold standard for melodic British steel.
