about the photographer:
KRK Dominguez has been documenting the punk scene since 1984. He was one of the more vanguard characters in the Flipside Fanzine family, whose photographs graced many iconic covers (Fugazi, Cows, Poison Idea, Dwarves, etc.), in addition to being one of the more rogue interviewers/reviewers they had on board. His shots captured the essence and energy of the scene and the characters that inhabited it. His style was raw and embodied the DIY ethic that drove that scene. His work has appeared on record covers for numerous bands including Visual Discrimination, Doggy Style, The Offspring, Haywire, Final Conflict, Anus The Menus, Carry Nation, The Flower Leperds, The Dickies and The Dwarves. More than a witness, KRK is still documenting the current thriving underground music scene with collaborative partner JKX. Their work has recently been seen on the cover of La Bestia’s “Mind Games” cd and a few more, as of yet, to be released.
Never one to conform, KRK has devised a primitive yet, gargantuan format to showcase his awesome images. These prints, simply put, are behemoth in size. Some of them clock in at 3 feet by 13 feet. Their size will compete with your refrigerator and couch for attention! All prints are scanned from the original negatives. And NONE of his photos are Photoshopped – what you see is what you get – lint, scratches and all – PR! Given the oddity of this printing process (which Mr. Dominguez is being very secretive about), each and every print is an individual piece of work. To make another print would require another scan and another scan would require another negative grab. The way KRK scans his negatives guarantees that no two scans will be identical, ever. This process, and the fact that all the scans for this particular show have been wiped out due to a lost hard drive, truly make these prints ONE of a kind. The images are captured on 20 lb. paper that comes in rolls and printed with a dry ink laser printer. The prints come complete with a hand stamp that includes information about print #, band, venue, year, and publication and are signed by KRK. They are also embossed and stamp overlaid with the logo of his brainchild, Burning Wolf Press. All prints are from his recent Los Angeles exhibition “Snapshots from the Epicenter Vol. I” at Primera Taza Gallery.
