This handsome and wonderful gatefold LP from Columbia (WSX 604, LP pressed in The Netherlands / jacket printed in Germany, green/silver label, mono) entitled 'Das Phänomen David Oistrakh' ('The Phenomenon David Oistrakh') features one of the greatest violin encore albums ever issued, with the legendary Russian virtuoso on peak form in a wide-ranging, brilliant program. Indeed, this disc remains an invaluable addition to the art of the violin.

Note: This is the same 'Encores' album that appeared on English Columbia (SAX 2253) and US Angel (35354); German Columbia chose to title it 'Bravourstücke seines programms'. I have sold this edition twice before, though in both cases the LP was pressed in Germany, with a blue/gold label; this is the first time I have seen the Dutch green/silver label, which is much more attractive and quite striking in appearance.

Oistrakh recorded all 8 selections in a single day’s session on 28 February 1956 with his long-time recital partner, the brilliant Vladimir Yampolsky. Included are:

Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune (from Suite Bergamasque – arr. Roelens)

Manuel de Falla’s Jota (No. 4 from 7 Canciones Populares Españolas – arr. Kochanski)

Eugene Ysaÿe’s Extase Op. 21

Peter Il'ych Tchaikovsky’s Valse Scherzo Op. 34 (arr. Bezekirsky)

Josef Suk’s Love Song Op. 7 No. 1 (arr. Kocian)

Zoltan Kodàly’s Three Hungarian Folk Dances (arr. Feigin)

Henryk Wieiawski’s Legénde Op. 17

Alexander Zarzycki’s Mazurka for Violin and Piano in G Major Op. 26 

The tone is unmistakable, as is the generous personality, charm, and fantasy of the artistry.  Every miniature sounds from under Oistrakh’s bow as a minor masterpiece, each as captivating as the last. Those who eschew such encore fare would be hard pressed to resist the sheer magic of Oistrakh’s playing here, perfectly encapsulated in these chips from the master’s workbench, and the perfect tonic to the more ‘serious’ fare usually on offer from this most probing of violinists.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the gatefold jacket is GOOD+. There is wear, a few small tearns and some discoloration along the edges. There is also mild ringwear and scuffing. On the plus side, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive, the inner stitched sleeve perfectly intact – still a decent copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is some occasional light surface noise, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
