Few bands defined emo in the 2000s more than Dashboard Confessional. On this breakthrough third album, frontman Chris Carrabba perfectly distills post-adolescent angst and the dizzyingly wide emotional spectrum it entails. Romantic hopefulness (“Hands Down”) hangs out with revenge-fueled breakups (“Rapid Hope Loss”) on songs whose sincerity is matched only by their intimacy. After two relatively low-key albums, A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar is, to quote Rolling Stone, “the toughest, most assured music [Carrabba] has ever made, summing up the vulnerable charisma that has made him a cult idol for fans.”

Channeling both 1970s soft rock and Eighties hardcore, Carrabba hits his vocal high mark on this landmark album. “Most [emo] artists … can’t muster a wide emotional range,” wrote Blender at the time. “They’re good at rage or wonder, but not both. Carrabba can hit both poles in a single song.”
