David Friedrich "Dave" Dallwitz (25 October 1914 – 23 March 2003) was a South Australian jazz musician, painter and art teacher whose work spanned almost seven decades.

Dave was born in Freeling, South Australia the son of (Joseph) Ernst Dallwitz and his wife Clara Magdalena Dallwitz (née Rohde). He studied violin as a child, and after moving with his family to Adelaide in 1930 he developed an aptitude for jazz piano. From 1933 to 1935 he studied concurrently at the South Australian School of Art and the North Adelaide School of Fine Art.

Dave was a jazz pianist, bandleader and composer in both the ragtime and dixieland idioms. He is perhaps best known for having worked with some of Australia's more progressive musicians such as John Sangster, Bob Barnard and Len Barnard. He also led the Dave Dallwitz Ragtime Ensemble.

He led the Southern Jazz Group from 1945 to 1951 then virtually abandoned jazz for a period, during which he studied at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, composing symphonic and chamber music and playing cello and bassoon in various groups. He became involved in composing and arranging music for revues, leading to the formation of the Flinders Street Revue Company, for which he also directed and played piano. He returned to jazz in 1970 and resumed recording shortly after, and is regarded as one of this country's important jazz personalities."

Dallwitz was an exponent of both Ragtime Music and 1920s Big Band Music. A highlight of Dave's career was the appearance of his Big band with added Sydney and Brisbane musicians at the Esso Jazz Summit on Sydney's Bondi Beach in 1986. The band's set was shown on ABC TV and was released on ABC Records.

It wasn't long between the publication of the Ern Malley poems in the Autumn 1944 issue of Angry Penguins, and the revelation in the Adelaide and Sydney newspapers that they had been dashed off as a joke by a couple of clever young men one idle afternoon, who wanted to prove that even meaningless codswallop could get taken seriously by the avante garde. The immediate fall out was the humiliation of Max Harris, the passionate champion of modernist poetry who had published the poems with great praise. To add insult to injury, Harris was then successfully prosecuted for publishing 'indecent matter' as some of the poems were found to be under the South Australian Police Act. Taking a longer view, the prank arguably undermined the cause of literary modernism and experimentation in Australian literature. The great irony is that the poems endure as popular literary works in their own right, and have continued to inspire generations of artists, writers and imitators.

Other literary hoaxes have occurred in ensuing years - but Ern Malley remains at the top of the tree - and his works continue to be published, purchased and analysed.

He has inspired writers, composers and performers. Dave Dallwitz, who was an Angry Penguins contributor, later wrote and recorded The Ern Malley Jazz Suite in his honour.
