Description
Here’s a genuine original early copy of the ultra-rare David Bowie 1970 debut Mercury 12” stereo vinyl LP ‘Man of Words, Man of Music’, later released as ‘David Bowie’ and ‘Space Oddity’ on various UK and USA releases and re-issues. The LP catalogue number is SR 61246.
It has the striking 'Depth of a Circle' painting by George Underwood on the back cover, and excerpts of the lyrics from the songs on the album.
This is my personal copy owned from new, which I’ve decided to let loose on the collector market. I’m a confirmed Bowie devotee and will always play his music; yes, I did buy the Philips ‘Space Oddity’ UK single in 1969, and helped to put Bowie in the charts - and still have that record!)
I’m selling some of my rare vinyl records to raise funds for more music and audio purchases, having kept digital copies.
This LP has been well looked after; it plays superbly, has always been stored properly in a smoke, pet and brat-free home, and played rarely - only on audiophile equipment.
It will be among the best copies of this sought-after album on the market, with both gatefold sleeve and vinyl in excellent condition. The original white inner sleeve is also in excellent, undamaged condition. There is an original small punch-hole on sleeve and inner sleeve, as there often is on American releases.
There is a tiny amount of fraying on the rear LP sleeve corners exists, but there are no sleeve splits or tears and the spine is fine. I confess (as a teenager) to felt-colouring the ‘David Bowie’ block letters on the inner gatefold - but it is in a very tasteful matching green!
The photos show the actual item on offer. The Matrix Number details are as below:
Side One: ‘SR 61246 - A - 2’, ‘>1’ and it also has a small ‘MR’ stamp also on the inner groove.
Side Two: ‘SR 61246 - B - 1’, with ‘1-1’ (manually etched), and it also has a small ‘MR’ stamp on the inner groove.
I believe that this indicates that this copy is a genuine first pressing of the album.
All Bowie fans know that collectors are snapping up well-kept copies of cherished Bowie releases and here is another chance to get a fast-disappearing classic artifact of the Bromley boy!
Payment is by PayPal, (cleared) cheque, postal orders or cash on collection (I’m in north Birmingham B24). Please pay within 5 days of the auction end. Auction price plus carriage costs must be agreed and paid in full prior to dispatch.
Collection from me in north Birmingham B24 (Jn. 6 of the M6) is possible, or I will arrange carriage. The LP will be mailed carefully in a substantial cardboard mailer with disc and sleeve protection properly applied.
Postal costs are standard Royal Mail inland UK charges. Charges applicable to a non-UK destination will exceed the cost that is cited on this auction; applicable charges must be agreed and paid in full prior to dispatch. Insurance can be added to the package at the buyer’s expense.
