Simply one of the finest albums ever made.  The personnel line up is like a who’s who of West coast rock including Nash and Young (but oddly no Stills?) with Joni Mitchell as well as most of the Grateful Dead, most of Jefferson Starship, members of Santana, Spirit and various other West Coast luminaries.   The music is gorgeous, atmospheric, laid back West Coast rock.  This is the rare original UK pressing with the plum Atlantic label and it’s in great condition.

Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name proved to be a perfect coming together of the sound he had been pursuing throughout his time with The Byrds and CSN. His songs always stood out for their strange, dream-like qualities, and now it was time for a whole album of them. Backing Crosby was an amalgamation of various hip west-coast rock bands and singer-songwriters (most notably members of The Grateful Dead and jefferson Airplane). Most of the instrumental backing came from various combinations of Jerry Garcia (guitar/pedal steel), Jorma Kaukonen (guitar), Neil Young (guitar) Phil Lesh (bass), Jack Casady (bass) Bill Kreutzmann (drums) and Mickey Hart (drums). Vocal support mostly came from Graham Nash, but there were also appearances from Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner and David Freiburg. Pianist Gregg Rolie and drummer Michael Shrieve (of Santana) also appeared on one song.

Crosby's greatest strength has always been his amazing voice, and the focus of If I Could Only Remember My Name is firmly on the vocals. He makes use of overdubbing to harmonize with himself, and it reaches its pinnacle on the final track, "I'd Swear There Was Somebody There", where a mass choir of David Crosbys sings a cappella. Many of the songs have no lyrics, and he makes use of his voice as an instrument, often in harmony with musical partner Graham Nash. And behind the stunning vocals is some seriously good instrumental backing - it's not often you hear Jerry Garcia and Neil Young trading guitar licks, or Garcia and Jorma Kaukonen jamming over an integrated Airplane / Santana rhythm section.

The result was a fantastic album of transcendental music, something which has a sound all of its own, almost spiritual. The fact that it was recorded seemingly just as some jamming between a loose group of musician friends makes it even more extraordinary. Still today it is this one record which defines everything about David Crosby's music (indeed he has never come close to bettering this forty years later).

Condition:

Sleeve:

A sleeve which is notoriously prone to wear, this one however is in very strong condition throughout.

The front sleeve is extremely clean, no tears, no ink marks, no creases, no ringwear or any other type of wear or damage.  There is one tiny abrasion at the junction with the spine, about two thirds of the way up but this needs mentioning but is an extremely minor flaw, look at the front sleeve and it can’t really be seen, looking at the spine and it still can’t be seen but if held at the right angle then it is visible, that minor imperfection aside, very nice!

The rear sleeve is also in very nice shape, no wear or damage of any type.

Inside the gatefold is just perfect.

The top seams have only an extremely small (finger nail length) patch of wear at the junction with the open edge and are for the most part totally unworn.

The bottom seams are also for the most part totally unworn, again there’s a finger nail length of wear at the junction with the open edge and another of the same size at the junction with the spine.

The spine is totally unworn with all of the writing clearly readable.

Record:

The disc is also in superb condition, it’s made from good quality vinyl which has obviously not been played much.  In normal light the vinyl has a lovely dark sheen and no visible surface marks of any type.  Even when viewed closely under a very harsh lamp there are no surface marks of any type visible.

Both labels are in perfect condition, very clean with all of the writing clearly readable and very little spindle wear.  The matrix numbers stamped into the run out grooves are 2401005 A/1 and B/1.

When played the record just sounds great and reproduces the music to a very high quality.  The sound is very detailed with a dynamic quality perfect for the music, at times it seems to leap out of the speakers but depending on the mood of the music it also seems to ease out at times filling the air with a lovely ambiance.  Throughout the whole album I couldn’t hear any surface noise at all which would spoil your enjoyment of the beautiful music, the sound is clear and clean with no groove wear or distortion,  no pops, clicks or crackles, certainly no jumping or sticking, this is a very strong copy of a classic rock album which isn’t at all easy to find in its original format.

All records will be sent housed in PVC sleeves with the records removed from the outer covers.  The packaging will be strong and adequate enough to protect the record well on it’s journey.  Although I haven’t been that active on ebay (mainly cos I hate using computers) I’ve bought and sold records all over the world for over 30 years now and never had any complaints of records being damaged in transit.
