DE LA SOUL

This debut album from De La Soul is one of the most important rap albums of all time. A defining classic of what became the Native Tongues movement of rap music in the late-’80s and early ‘90s, 3 Feet High And Rising is the sound of three MCs — Posdnuos, Trugoy and Maseo — and their co-producer, Prince Paul, realizing a masterpiece in a mix of samples (over 200, reportedly), inside jokes, and pastel colors. Where their Native Tongue compatriots would bend jazz to the will of their hip-hop, De La and Paul scratch their names onto funk and blues beats that sound as dusty and indelible as the vinyl they came from.


3 Feet High and Rising is the sound not only of young, black American men discovering themselves, but of their first bumpy forays into the outside world.
