Every year, my fiends and I compile a Top 10 list; it was a tradition that began with Deathrow's "Raging Steel", since we all chose it as the best of 1987! Now, I don't recall what other releases came out that year, but being an avid metal collector, I'm sure there was plenty of competition...I am saying that this album isn't as "average" as other reviews may lead one to believe.
Yes, this is German thrash. No, there isn't anything terribly "original", though one could never mistake Deathrow for the acknowledged titans of Deutscher thrash; their sound is their own, yet based upon what had come before. This bridges the gap between the basic material on their first, "Riders of Doom (AKA "Satan's Gift")" and the technical/progressive material on their third, "Deception Ignored". There are just plain KILLER songs on "Raging Steel"! Sure, a couple songs are familiar-sounding and less memorable, but there are some authentic thrash classics to be found on here. In fact, the "filler" songs are of much higher caliber than the filler songs by other bands at the same period.
Milo's vocals stand out as unique, if not very inspired. He has a rather nasal mid-range voice that can almost hit a scream when needed. Think Tom Araya's screams that you can hear are difficult for him, or perhaps a less-accomplished Schmier, and you will have Milo's sound. And his German accent is VERY pronounced...it is endearingly fun to hear him singing 'za SING...za SING...za SIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNG!' at the end of "The Thing Within", rather than 'the THING'!
The instuments are nothing that will make one sit up and gape in awe. The playing is simply dead-on, with no showboating on anyone's part. There are some cool guitar leads, with sometimes the riffs and melodies being extrapolations of what could be considered "guitar solos". There are some very crunchy breaks, just plain out-and-out thrash (see "The Undead Cry" instrumental which actually manages to remain interesting throughout). Tempos remain mostly quick, sometimes slowing to a start-stop chunky bridge, and sometimes speeding up to an all-out attack; again, very comparable to all the thrash albums that were around at the same time. All the elements of classic thrash are here...and the listener WILL remember many of the riffs and changes. In my book, that is a sure sign of songwriting excellence.
There are a few parts on here that are quite cheesey, but no moreso than any early German bands' material. All the themes are here, war, homicidal maniacs, dragons, zombies, executions, and yet another German band's take on the death camps of WWII. Amusing lyric:'1939, a crazy man ruled Germany. Hitler was the asshole's name, the name of tyranny!' In the lack-of-originality department, we have yet another metal album ending with a condemned man's approach to his execution; but this is no worse or better than the other songs of that ilk. The album's production is excellent (in fact, quite a bit better than their follow-up); very crisp sound, nothing is lacking.
This album stands the test of time; I've been listening to it repeatedly lately, and I hold it right beside "Infernal Overkill", "Terrible Certainty", and "Agent Orange"...yes, it IS that good. Except Deathrow never got the recognition that their Bavarian brothers did.

Note About Shipping To The U.S.
We are located in Canada, but have registered ourselves on eBay.com instead of eBay.ca because it gives us significantly better global exposure. The problem with this is that eBay wants us to charge shipping appropriate to US, where media mail and other options make for fairly reasonable delivery costs. We tried it for a while but ended up losing money on shipping or having to cancel the orders because we couldn't afford to ship for those rates. To manage this we have set the US shipping to run a calculator based on an American location (we chose Plattsburgh as fairly close) and charging according to UPS pricing. This avoids the cancellation issue, but appears to the buyer to be a prohibitive shipping cost and misrepresents the shipping as being only expedited. If you give us your postal code we will see if we can offer a more reasonable option, but generally we can get a single LP by air to most places in the continental US for $11, a few bucks less for ground.
