A 1956 Decca Records lp Covering Violinist Supreme Florian Zabach!
Classically-trained (at the Chicago Cosmopolitan Conservatory Of Music) violinist Florian ZaBach (born in Chicago on August 15, 1918 - died at age 88 on February 25, 2006) first performed publicly in 1930 when he was all of 12 years of age by performing the Mendelssohn concerto with the Chicago Symphony. Later he would conclude his studies in Czechoslovakia at the Prague Conservatory before launching his professional career as a member of the musical family at Chicago's WGN Radio. After serving with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he picked up his professional career by performing at Washington's Mayflower Hotel.
As a recording artist over the years he concentrated more on albums than singles, but in April-May 1951 he scored his first national hit when, with the backing of an orchestra directed by Al Rickey, his adaptation of the Belgian song "Le Canari" which he titled The Hot Canary, made it to # 13 Pop on Decca 9-27509 b/w Jalousie. That soon led to his being one of the most sought-after guests on TV, starting with his frequent appearances on the Arthur Godfrey Show, followed by invites from This Is Show Business (1951) and The Cavalcade Of Stars (1952). Neither of his next two singles got him back on the national charts (The Happy Whistler b/w Jazz Legato - Jazz Pizzicato - Decca 28090 in May 1952 and Gypsy Fiddler b/w Meditation (from "Thais") - Decca 28507 in Feb 1953, but in April that year he had Red Canary top out at # 22 on Decca 28646 b/w April In Portugal.
That would be his final Decca hit as none among Pussy Footin' b/w Red Wing (Decca 28781 in Dec 1953), The Funny Fiddle b/w Plink, Plank, Plunk (Decca 28916 in Jan 1954), Callaghan's Monkey b/w Solfeggio (Decca 29047 in May 1954) and Nocturne b/w Poem By Fibich (Decca 29497 in March 1955) could get him back on the charts, although his albums continued to be popular, including the LP covered here, "Hot Canary" (Decca DL-74425) containing: A1. The Hot Canary; A2. Jalousie; A3. Running Off The Rails; A4. Tea For Two; ; A5. The Funny Fiddle; A6. Theme From Chpon's Fantasie Impromptu; B1. Red Wing; B2. Jazz Legatyo - Jazz Pizzicato; B3. Gypsy Fiddler; B4. The Waltzing Cat; B5. Plink, Plank, Plunk; B6. The Happy Whistler.
In Sept 1956 he had his final nationally-charting side when his version of When The White Lilacs Bloom Again finished at # 50 Pop b/w The Fiddler's Boogie on Mercury. In the meantime, he continued to be in demand on TV, appearing with Jackie Gleason (1954), Ed Sullivan (1957), Jack Paar (4 times from 1958 to 1962) and the Mike Douglas Show (1966), among many more including his own The Florian ZaBach Show out of Hollywood. In fact, he became so familiar a TV personality that his work earned him a Hollywood Walk Of Fame star on Hollywood Blvd.
