Decca SXL 2141 Glazunov: The Seasons Ballet, Opus 76
First Edition Release of This Beautiful Ballet Music
This is fascinating and dynamic music & beautifully recorded. It is performed by L'Orchestre De La Society Des Concerts Du Conservatoire De Paris & conducted by Albert Wolff. Album first released June 1960.I once owned 72 lineal feet of mostly pristine LP’s, many played maybe once or not at all — I was collecting way too much! I pared down to a smaller collection after selling my state-of-the-art stereo system (VPI turntable / Graham tonearm / Benz Micro cartridge) about 20 years ago. This record has been stored unplayed under ideal conditions since that disposal. My decision to end my "high-end" playing days was also due to a deteriorating hearing condition. I have only played this LP twice, once back then in my "high-end" days and once again recently before offering it now for sale.
Overall, this LP plays very nicely with fairly typical musical sound from this label — but perhaps not quite as mid bass “weighty” as some. Background vinyl noise is fairly consistant and typical of the early Decca LP's I have listened too. This ballet music is lively and violin sounds are nice and without brittle or edgy early CD characteristics. After all, the was the vacuum tube era! 95% of the playback time I feel orchestral levels are loud enough that background noise doesn’t intrude on one’s enjoyment (again not for my ears). All LP playback setups have different signal to noise characteristics so YMMV. As a long time LP addict, I quit paying attention years ago to so-called surface noise and background sounds, including minor wear and low level tics & pops, etc., if present. We buy LP's for their unique analog characteristics, not CD like quietness.
I have no qualms representing this particular LP as excellent sounding overall, with minimal intrusions on the music. From my notes (based on single play), depending on where the needle touches down on side 1, there may be pops before the music starts, but not after. Then about 7:20 in a single moderate pop. Side 2, a light pop about 4 minutes in and a tick at about 9:30. I need to repeat that I can not hear higher frequency or quieter ticks. If I played it again, my notes could be different — the music immediately takes over and is lovely, causing your mind to forget about the rare intrusions. The “loudness” of pops described is subjective, obviously.
The LP itself appears very clean with only one very faint curving scuff “line" on side 1 and at least one manufacturing “dimple” . Visually overall it is excellent. I thought I saw another scuff but repeatedly tried to see it again but couldn’t. It is in very nice shape for a 60 year old LP!
Jacket Condition is only good to fair. Material is very thin and flimsy but is holding together. Front art work is laminated - there are creases and edge damage in lower left area of jacket. The art work is good and I’ve tried to render the original colors as true as I can (I’m a photographer).
Back text is good but now lightly discolored & with brownish stains. The LP spine is without labeling, probably because the jacket so very light and thin. The photo of the back cover text will tell you more and it should be readable, but let me know. Text has no author and there is no date anywhere on album.
I have a feeling this LP is fairly rare but that is just a guess!
The LP comes with a quality 6 mil outer sleeve over the jacket. When shipped the LP will be removed from jacket to prevent tears & damage to the jacket.
The LP will be shipped insured. Media Mail is a touch slower but inexpensive.
The dark charcoal gray labels are both the same in actuality. It is only my photo processing that makes them look a little different!
