The year I got out of high school, and the middle of my scene years.

This one came out the year I graduated high school. I was briefly in school after that, and I was going to parties in Boston. My raver friends and I promoted for a club in the city, and this record sits right in the middle of those years for me.

I remember a night Dmitry played. I could not tell you whether he played anything off this record, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. But the D.M.T. remix on Side A was in heavy rotation for me for a long stretch, and hearing it now puts me right back in that time.

This was the last Deee-Lite release. Kier and Dmitry had already split, the band was finished, and what came out in 1996 was their own back catalogue handed to other producers: Carl Craig on “Heart Be Still”, Todd Terry on “Bittersweet Loving”, Ian Pooley on “Power Of Love”, Murk Boys, Jonny L, Plaid, Pal Joey, and Supa DJ Dmitry with DJ Silver on the two that open Side A. Every track on it is an old Deee-Lite song rebuilt by somebody who was working the floors that year.

• •  Closes with the Sampladelic mix of “Groove Is In The Heart”.

Two things I would rather tell you than let you find out. “Try Me On” (Plaid) is on this vinyl and on no standard CD. It is missing from the US, European, Canadian and Australian discs, and from the cassette and the digital release. It turns up only on the Japanese CD and on a US promo CD. Its link below is a fan upload rather than the official one, because there is no official upload of it. And “Bittersweet Loving” runs 5:50 here, printed right there on the sleeve. Every CD of this album, the cassette and the download all run it at 3:55. I checked every pressing of it I could find: the long Todd Terry cut is on the vinyl and nowhere else. The mix you will hear at that link is the short one.

A promotional edition of this record exists with the same track listing and the same matrix numbers, under a different catalogue number. This is not that one. This is the retail pressing, 61872-1, and the barcode on the jacket says so.

Graded to the Goldmine standard, the same scale Discogs uses.

Vinyl: graded Very Good Plus (VG+). Very Good Plus means that except for a couple of minor things this would be Near Mint. It was played and it was looked after. Anything on it is cosmetic: light scuffs, or very light hairlines you cannot feel with a nail, that do not affect play. No groove wear. No writing or stickers on the label. A slight warp is allowed only if you cannot hear it. Both discs are present. Not play-tested.

Sleeve: G+, and the corners are why. This lived in crates, so the corners are frayed and worn through in places, with the usual shelf and edge wear on a jacket of this age. The faces are clean and the artwork is bright. It is honest crate wear, not abuse, but I would rather call it G+ and have you be pleased than call it VG and argue about it.

Info sheet: present, magenta, with some edge wear and a torn corner.

Shipping & care: both records in clean inner sleeves, jacket and info sheet protected, boxed in a rigid LP mailer with stiffeners. It arrives exactly as it left.
