Description
Classical record connoisseurs know full well the legendary status of original Early Mercury Living Presence Stereo disks of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Superlative Mercury sound technicians of the era worked often with the London Symphony Orchestra and its various conductors of the period, deftly recording amidst the warm sonic ambiance of Watford Town Hall just outside London. Mercury Living Presence Stereo acoustics for the era far exceed in recording quality and dynamics all other early Stereo disks. You hear that here from the very first groove--thanks to the path-breaking acoustical genius of Recording Director Wilma Cozart, a masterly stature quite rare for a woman at the time! The Russian-born Anatole Fistoulari was a musical prodigy and widely experienced European orchestral conductor of the first rank who always showed a deft hand with scintillating interpretations of late Romantic era symphonic masterworks like the complete Delibes Sylvia Ballet Suite presented here--one of the finest French grand dance compositions of the latter 19th Century. Fistoulari's long experience conducting the famed Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo prepped him perfectly for this role, Even better, the 2-LP Set on offer here is a now Rare, First Edition and First Pressings of Fistoulari's inspired, sprightly, and impassioned reading of the complete Delibes score. Both Disks are in Near-Mint Condition. First Edition and First Pressings on heavy-gauge vinyl of the Original February 1959 Living Presence Stereo Release. Disk Deadwax Machine Stamped FR2 A1 (Side 1), FR3 A2 (Side 2), FR2 D1 (Side 3), and FR2 A2 (Side 4), Indicating First Edition and First/Early Pressings. Under bright light, Disks still show very high gloss surfaces all sides with just two very light hairlines (Side 2, Track 1, Side 4, Track 2) entirely inaudible on careful play-back. Play Grading throughout reveals superior Mercury sonics, very quiet disk surfaces, and bright, brilliant, superbly captured, masterly playing from all orchestral sections--among the finest renditions that Delibes' masterwork ever received on vinyl. Original, heavy, Gate-Fold Jacket is also Near-Mint, All Seams Intact. Not a Cut-Out. Inner, audiophile, plastic-lined paper sleeves not original but in perfect condition. Clearly a set exceptionally well cared for by a prior owner Thus this is a highly collectible and now quite Rare exemplar of one of Fistoulari's best performances leading a great British symphonic ensemble in epoch-making French ballet music.
