This beautiful and very rare gatefold LP – a lovely collector's copy – from Stefanotis (PAM 601, French pressing, black/silver label, stereo) features the remarkable pianist Monique Deschaussées – a pupil of Lazare Lévy, Alfred Cortot, and Edwin Fischer – in a sublime all-Schubert program recorded in May 1983 at l'église Notre-Dame du Liban, Paris.

Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat Major D. 960

            I Molto moderato (13:33)

            II Andante sostenuto (9:13)

            III Scherzo – allegro con delicatezza (4:05)

            IV Allegro ma non troppo (8:09)

Schubert: Trois Moments Musicaux D. 780

            I Moderato (4:02)

            II Andantino (6:27)

            III "Air Russe" – Allegro moderato (1:49)

This album was produced by Georges Kisselhoff and engineered by François-Emmanuel Porché. The superb liner notes were written by Claude Nanquette and are provided in English, French, and German. The remarkable cover art is entitled “Déspayasages” and is the work of Irena Dedicova.

Note: Included is a separate black & white glossy photo of Deschaussees measuring 12.4 cm X 17.6 cm.

Deschaussees has made all too few recordings. To my knowledge there is only one other LP, an equally rare Turicaphon issue (30-631) featuring this same performance of Schubert's B-flat Sonata D. 960, but with a different coupling: Brahms Fantasien Op. 116.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the gatefold jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears virtually as new – a truly beautiful collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
