Item Description
Here is your chance to own a very Rare original Beatles related 1960’s acetate Demo Disc. A one-sided disc featuring Billy J Kramer singing ‘I Call Your Name’. This was a song written by Lennon/McCartney & was issued by Parlophone as the B side to Kramer’s hit ‘Bad to Me’ in 1963. The Beatles later recorded this song & released it on their Long Tall Sally EP.
The acetate disc is 6.5 inches in diameter & plays at 45rpm. The other side of the disc is blank. The disc has Melodisc labels on both sides. The track side has a Dick James Demo Disc label stuck over the Melodisc label. This was normal practice. The printed (red) label has the speed, song title & artist typed on in blue. In addition there is a small numbered sticker used by the record company/owner to catalogue his records, and a small tick. This acetate was part of a large collection obtained from someone in the music business.
An acetate is a transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record. It is metal plate covered in a layer of acetone. Very few are made and they are distributed to people directly involved with the recording in order that they can approve the sound before the record is cut. They also tend to be far less durable than records & are only designed to last for a few plays.
However this disc is in super condition for an acetate. The playing surface has been played & has a few surface marks but NO scratches. I would grade it EX- on a normal vinyl grading system, which is very nice for an acetate. It plays superbly with just a very slight hiss. Please bear in mind that the difference between Mint & Good for an acetate is probably only 10 to 20 plays! The label is very clean & the disc has been carefully stored for the last 40+ years. This is a super item that would make a nice addition to any collection, especially a Beatles collection. You may never get another opportunity to own this record.
