Dio – Holy Diver (1983)
This is an absolute classic of the early 80’s! THE debut studio album by Heavy Metal band Dio. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio had finished his first stint with Black Sabbath and created this beast of a vinyl classic working with drummer Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath) Jimmy Bain (Rainbow) and Vivian Campbell (Sweet Savage). The original vinyl release featured a photo montage of the band from the Rainbow and Black Sabbath era. The album cover and band name were controversial – the album cover seems to portray a priest being drowned in chains by a devil character (known as Murray – Dio’s mascot) and the name of the band when viewed upside down can be read as DIE or DEVIL. The band and album artwork took a fantasy theme as did Dio’s lyrics. The album was critically acclaimed as the bands best work and most successful. Certified as gold in the US on 12th September 1984 and subsequently platinum by 1989. There are very few albums that reach these peaks, having been ranked as 16th in Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Metal Albums of all time.
I will be eBaying this item - Original first pressing – ref: VERS5 Phonogram International records 1983 Vertigo label. Heavy Metal / Hard Rock Pretty sure this is a variant 1 with a Matrix / Runout (Side A runout, stamped, variant 1): VERS 5 A // 1 ? 420 W 1 1 Label timings are also consistent with the early pressing (later pressings had the track durations being a few seconds shorter) Album sleeve in VG + condition with just a few scuffs on corners. Disc is in VG+ / Excellent condition and plays really well. Hardly any pops and crackles. I only noticed one pop on 'Straight through the heart' on side B Comes with picture inner sleeve (see photos) which is in excellent condition. A really quite rare disc with few re-issues.
