Diplomats – ‘Cards On The Table’ / ‘Unchained Melody’ – Arock 1000 (US)

No introduction necessary: Art Sears’ Arock label is one of the greatest in Soul, and the record that kicked off the proceedings all those years ago is a double-sided scorcher. ‘Cards On The Table’, penned by Van McCoy under his nom de plum Allen Davis, has the edge, but their version of the soon-to-be-a-standard ‘Unchained Melody’ is certainly not to be sniffed at. The Diplomats from D.C. went on to have quite an illustrious career, cutting the magnificent ‘Here’s A Heart’ and ‘Help Me’ for Arock, as well as a handful of fine sides for Dynamo, before they evolved into The Skull Snaps. If you need this record, don’t hesitate; it’s a top copy!

Condition: VG++ or perhaps a notch better; some scuffs causing one or two almost inaudible clicks and a little dust, that’s all (please listen to the clips). Clean labels, one of which is about to become unglued – a common problem with Shrine and Arock records, but so far is still holding on (please see scans).
