Description
A small quantity of these wonderful tapes appeared in a recent batch and I haven't encountered better quality on 7 1/2 ips 4 track, not even on Barclay-Crocker.
For those who are unfamiliar with the Direct-to-Tape Recording Company (and I was until these), they adopted a purist approach to recording, using a single microphone pair, recording direct to master tape and then duplicating at real time, releasing in 2 or 4 track, 7 1/2 or 15 ips, using Dolby B, DBX II or no noise reduction, on standard or mastering tape. They did the occasional release under license, using the same duplication techniques. One of those is included. The company is still around, now releasing on CD.
These are all 4 track 7 1/2 ips, recorded on one side of the tape only.
Curiously the boxes are marked TypeX for DBX. Those guys were less supportive than Dolby who figured every release in their format helped their cause.

This tape is a selection of brass music from the mid 1800's, played by The American Brass Quintet
This is DBX II encoded, duplicated onto what they termed Mastering quality tape.
It is reference TI-81, the original recording is licenced from Titanic Records, made using Direct-to-Tape techniques and reproduced one-one in the same way as other Direct-to-Tape Recording Co releases. It's just superb to listen to the pure sound of the ensemble recorded and reproduced in this way.
All tapes are play tested on one of my own tape decks before listing and I check for no signs of oxide shed during play or fast winding.
