If you have a VPI Record Cleaning Machine, this package of cleaning items is exactly what you need to get "the sound you thought you bought" from your records. This Disc Doctor pack includes 32 ounces of the Disc Doctor Miracle Record Cleaner, a pair of Disc Doctor Brushes, DD Stylus Cleaner and a VPI tube and tube holder (for the rinse cycle).
I believe it is all but IMPOSSIBLE to make meaningful comparisons among used records that have not been properly cleaned. I have this fact thrown in my face on a near daily basis, as so-so record after so-so record reveals the magic in its grooves after a good cleaning.
In 2007 we purchased an Odyssey RCM MKV Cleaning Machine. At about $7K it's an excellent machine if money's no issue. We still use our VPI machine in the early stages of our cleaning process; almost every record that we play in our Hot Stamper shootouts is first cleaned on the 16.5.
Disc Doctor and Walker Audio Prelude are the only fluids we recommend for serious SOUND ENHANCEMENT and cleaning of your LPs. We recommend you pour the VPI fluid that comes with this machine down the sink, as once you hear what the Disc Doctor and Walker fluids can do for the sound of a record, you will never want to use anything else. Or your money back.
Our good customer Dan wrote to tell us of his experience with the VPI and Disc Doctor fluids. He raves about the difference a good record cleaning can make when you have the right equipment and advice. (Right advice? What else would you expect from us!)Hey Tom,
Just wanted to say thank you for constantly recommending on your website the VPI 16.5/Disc Doctor combo. Purchasing these items from your store has been a tremendous upgrade and the difference in sound quality has been unfathomable. Who knew so much detail remained untapped simply because the record hadn't been cleaned by the proper solution on the proper machine? Honestly, it feels like a magic trick. When a better cartridge or amp is bought, it's usually no surprise if it sounds better.... because, well, it's a higher-grade piece of equipment. But here I'm playing the same friggin' record I had on the turntable just a few minutes ago, and yet you'd think I had just swapped it with some rare, higher quality pressing. Nope, it's just been cleaned right.
What really startled me about this upgrade was that I was already using a record cleaning machine and Disc Doctor fluid. I had the relatively cheap Nitty Gritty 1.0 and was using Disc Doctor's Quick Wash, a one-step cleaning process. Sure, it (modestly) improved the sonics. But I had a hunch that the 2-step method of DD's Miracle Cleaner would be significantly better since it's what you rightfully rave about on the website, and that the only way to do the multi-step method correctly is with the VPI and it's changeable vacuum tubes - whose absence on the Nitty Gritty caused me to ditch it.
Under this ridiculously improved cleaning method, formerly unlistenable records have become listenable. Good records now sound great. Tired-sounding musicians have sprung to life. And I noticed this improvement on records that had already been "cleaned"! In short: thanks for the awesome recommendation and equipment!!!
Dan
Dan, Thanks so much for the kind words. You'll notice that we stopped carrying the Quick Wash; sometimes it helped a little, sometimes it hurt, but at no time did it even remotely make the kind of improvement the real Disc Doctor fluids routinely make. You heard it; you know what I'm talking about. If you want to kick it up even further, try the Walker stuff! It made every previously Disc Doctored record we cleaned with it sound noticeably better. With the Walker fluids and the Talisman, our Hot Stampers got even hotter! There is simply no limit to how high your stereo can go. It's what the Revolutionary Changes in Audio link is all about. TP Click here for our record cleaning advice. Unless you've cleaned your records with The Disc Doctor's Miracle Record Cleaner and brushes, you've yet to enjoy all the music your records have to offer! EVERY RECORD IN YOUR COLLECTION SHOULD BE CLEANED BEFORE YOU PLAY IT AGAIN, AND EVERY RECORD ADDED TO YOUR COLLECTION SHOULD BE CLEANED BEFORE PLAYING. Every record, even if thought to be cleaned, is soiled with a wide range of dirts and contaminants, including mold and mildew. Vinyl discs are also coated with sticky mould-release compounds. Contaminants between the groove and diamond stylus or steel needle cause mistracking and are abrasive resulting in unnecessary, excessive wearing of both record and stylus. By interfering with proper groove tracing, dirty records produce inaccurate, noisy sound. A safe, effective, one-time cleaning solution has now been developed. Hundreds of pressings have been cleaned to complete satisfaction. In no case could more contaminants be removed from a properly cleaned record...if cleaned using the suggested procedure and with The Disc Doctor's Miracle Record Cleaner and Brushes, one cleaning is all a disc will ever need. Just keep it free of dust, fingerprints, and other contaminants and it won't need to be cleaned again. Dry brushing with a carbon fiber brush for vinyl or velvet duster for shellac, acetate and Diamond Discs is all the maintenance necessary.
