Shostakovitch lived in a period of history and in a society which has now vanished. His creative life was deeply influenced by the ideology and practice of Soviet communism and the polemics of the Cold War, two factors which restricted intellectual freedom in Russia including classical music composition.

Shostakovitch was the Soviet Union's most outstanding composer achieving almost iconic status in his lifetime. He was a patriotic Russian and a loyal communist.  Publicly he identified himself with the Soviet Union's political system but privately he refused to accept its cultural restrictions and at times he pushed artistic innovation to the limits of political acceptance. 

As a consequence some of his compositions were condemned as being incompatible with the official definition of acceptable music and at times his life in the Soviet Union became very precarious.

During 1936 and 1937, in order to maintain as low a profile as possible Shostakovitch mainly composed film music, a genre favored by Stalin and lacking in dangerous personal expression. it was during this time he wrote the first of his string quartets.

Unlike most of Shostakovitch.s other quartets, the eighth is the only substantial work he composed outside of Russia.

We post all orders the next working day. 

If you require a faster postal service than second class, please inform us before purchase, so we can amend postage charges (it’s just easier for everybody to get it out of the way in one transaction) 

We are always happy to combine postage where possible, please ask before paying, some items just don’t travel well together.
