Rare German issue of this fantastic 1971 live recording with free jazz meeting experimental classical. Don Cherry performs his own compositions as well as Penderecki's, leading The New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra, an amazing assemblage of international avant-improv superstars. Sax blower Peter Brotzmann and innovative guitarist Terje Rypdal are most prominently featured, each given a healthy dose of soloing space allowing them to stand out from the crowd; also performing in the Orchestra are Manfred Schoof, Han Bennink, Kenny Wheeler, Tomasz Stanko, Paul Rutherford, Albert Mangelsdorff, Gerd Dudek, Willem Breuker, Gunter Hampel, Fred van Hove, Buschi Niebergall, Peter Warren, Loes Macgillycutty, and Mocqui Cherry. Penderecki's Actions was directly inspired by his 1967 encounter with Alexander von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra, which shared many members with the short lived Orchestra recorded here. Includes insert.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Penderecki is a postwar Polish composer whose works have ranged from electroacoustic and avant garde to neo-romantic, and follow in the tradition of fellow eastern european composers Witold Lutoslawski and Bela Bartok. He was influenced by Edgard Varese, Gyorgi Ligeti, and Iannis Xenakis, the serialism of Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Pierre Boulez, and later the indeterminacy of John Cage and the New York School (Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Earle Brown). Cherry has played with John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Steve Lacy, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Dewey Redman, Jon Appleton, and John Tchicai. This album should be of interest to fans of Sun Ra, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Vinko Globokar, New Phonic Art, FMP, Incus, ESP, John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Company, Evan Parker, Borbetomagus, AMM, Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Instant Composers Pool, Anthony Braxton, Sonny Sharrock, Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo, John McLaughlin, Fred Frith, Keith Rowe, Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, and Michel Portal.
