Description
This is a first pressing of trumpeter Donald Byrd's Off to the Races, recorded December 21, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's in Hackensack, NJ. LP# 4007 has a great lineup: Byrd; Pepper Adams, bari; Jackie McLean, alto; Wyn Kelly, piano; Sam Jones, bass; Art Taylor, drums. Believe me, these cats are wailing. This is what has been called hard bop, and it is premiere hard bop at that, as these fellows are all in their prime. Music ranges from a sizzling Lover Come Back to Me to a subdued When Your Lover has gone. Hard not to like if this is your thing. Jacket: VG: Shows some shelf wear, but luster still strong, so looks good. Nice pic of Byrd on the cover. The issue is2 seam splits, top and bottom, 5” each. Darn. Address is 47 W. 63rd, New York 23. Vinyl: Ex: Plays close to new, about 10-15 light pops on entire program, these don't interfere with the enjoyment of the music; seems clear it has not been played much at all, hardly at all by me. Vinyl has plenty of luster, labels are clean; deep groove each side; Plastylite 'P' in dead wax, along with stamped RVG initials.
