Doug Anderson – ‘Hey Mama, Here Come The Preacher’ / ‘I Won’t Cry (I’ll Just Laugh Myself To Death)’– Janus 153 DJ (US)
Fabulous Eddie Bo-produced acid funk track, credited to Shelley Pope, a New Orleans DJ whose musical input here most likely was minimal. Please note: all copies of this rare 45 have a minor pressing fault, a slight drop-out – most likely the case of an absent-minded recording engineer pulling the fader somewhat prematurely – but this is how they come, so nothing to be done about that.
Flip is a very credible deep soul ballad. Doug Anderson, Sir Shambling tells us, was once a member of The Sonics (who recorded for White Cliffs) alongside Curtis Johnson.
Condition: Mint minus, played less than half a dozen times. A little dust, that’s all. As good as it gets really. Comes in an original Janus sleeve (which is very slightly creased). Listen to a snippet of the A-side here:
