Description
Doug Watkins "At Large" on Transition 20 from 1956. The record is in VG++ condition and both labels are clean. The record is square edged and machined stamped in the dead wax. The cover is in VG+ condition with a faded marker note: "Henry Clay Society in Jazz" on the front. The top and bottom seams are intact. The side seam/spine is split which I understand was very common with these jackets. Super rare issue that sounds great when I playgraded it on a Technics turntable. The awesome bass projection is enough to crack plaster! There are a few ticks and a 10 second click on Side One from a small scratch but it isn't overpowering at all. Side Two had a few ticks here and there but overall a fine playing copy of an almost impossible jazz album to find! Transition was a very small and obscure jazz label for a short time in the mid-1950s but they did a couple of great jazz records and Watkins at Large is one of them. This is Watkins on bass as leader of a band consisting of Duke Jordan on piano, Arthur Taylor on drums, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Byrd on trumpet and Hank Mobley on tenor sax. Watkins plays a seven-foot Italian bass on tunes including his own "Panonica" and a 13-minute version of Tiomkin's "Return to Paradise." According to Tom Wilson, who produced the session and wrote the notes, "Watkins at Large is one of those rare sessions where everyone falls immediately into the groove from the opening minute. The result of such a 'hang-upless' date is freely constructed, intensely personal jazz without pretension or frills." ** Pay Pal and other payment methods will be accepted.
