This is an example of the VERY RARE, ORIGINAL and CONTROVERSIAL 1965 EP from the earliest incarnation of 1960’s Rhythm & Blues band “Downliners Sect”.
Original copies of this EP are exceedingly scarce, via an extensive web search only one copy seems available elsewhere at the moment, priced at £168 !
The record was met with disgust at the time by the clean Britain brigade and banned by the BBC.
It contains four tracks, all about dead girlfriends in one context or another, all are tongue in cheek but I suppose in rather bad taste, particularly for 44 years ago.
The most attacked was track one, “I want my baby back” in which a guy just can’t get by without his dead girlfriend who has died in a car accident.
The accident is narrated with over the top sound effects and on the discovery that his girl has been thrown from the car, and on finding her body, comes the line “and over there was my baby, and over there was my baby, and way over there was my baby”
Later, wanting to see her again “so bad”, he digs her up and gets into the coffin with her. The track fades with the music now muted as if playing from inside the coffin.
All tame stuff really, but a very interesting and very scarce piece of vintage 1960’s avant-garde music, British Rhythm and Blues meets black comedy.
The record plays with NO skips or jumps and has bright and clear audio output.
It does have some “crackle” in varying degrees and it has quite a few cosmetic marks but importantly it actually plays very satisfactorily.
Summing up the audio…..some variable crackle but no jumps and no muffling.
