Mac Rebennack, reinvented as Dr. John the Night Tripper, brought New Orleans voodoo ritual into the psychedelic era, fusing R&B grooves with chants, incantations, and bayou mysticism.
And here’s the deeper story: the album was produced by Harold Battiste, a giant of New Orleans jazz and R&B, and the uncle of today’s Jon Batiste. Harold Battiste not only shepherded this record into being but was the one who first introduced the young Mac Rebennack to the music world. Without Battiste, there’s no Dr. John. His hand is everywhere on this LP—the arrangements, the atmosphere, the confidence to let ritual and rhythm take center stage. What you’re hearing is the fusion of a family’s musical lineage with the city’s cultural heartbeat.
