DESCRIPTION
Here is the mega-rare / highly sought-after Australian 1st and only pressing of this debut and landmark album by Irish psychedelic folk-rock outfit ‘Dr. Strangely Strange’ who took their name from the Marvel Comic character.Unusually enough it was released here on the collectable Calendar label as opposed to the Island label overseas. The rear cover is completely different as well with liner notes substituted for a second photo.
This album sold poorly upon release and rarely turns up these days, let alone in such fabulous condition as we have here.
A not often available opportunity to acquire this gem for your collection.
REVIEW
Ireland's answer to the Incredible String Band, Dr. Strangely Strange engaged in the same type of psychedelic acoustic music with folksy arrangements. With traditional instruments like penny whistle, fiddle, harmonium, and mandolin, Dr. Strangely Strange was more solidly rooted in melody and structure than the group's flaky Scottish counterparts. Produced by British modern folk guru Joe Boyd (Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band), ‘Kip of the Serenes’ is built around simple and repetitious melodies occasionally interrupted by stream-of-consciousness musical and lyrical diversions. This simplistic approach would be abandoned with their 1970 follow-up, Heavy Petting, which saw their first partnership with electric guitarist Gary Moore.CONDITION
VINYL ( cleaned and play tested before grading ) :- Simply a glorious copy !! This album never turns up ( at least on original vinyl ) and to come across one that still has all it’s original luster, barely played, virtually unmarked and on lovely 140 gram vinyl is quite a score. No lead-in / out hiss, pops or skips and a lovely crystal clear & clean sound all the way through You would be doing very well to ever find a better copy than this gem.
Rated EX+ and is certain to please.
LABELS :- Both labels are clean.
SLEEVE :- An excellent jacket. The front laminated cover is magnificent with only slight indentation of the vinyl, though it would be a tough call to say it was ring-wear. Some edge-wear at the lower corners but otherwise difficult to fault. No writing, splits or tears and the spine is intact. The rear cover is much the same however there is some very light and not unexpected soiling on the white background. There is also a small indentation at one point on the entrance on the back cover but again no big deal and overall this is a most presentable sleeve and probably as good as you are ever likely to see. The back sleeve also gives notes on the band and members.
