Description

In an original sleeve In the late 1920s and early 1930s, record labels quickly capitalized on the massive overnight success of the 1928 Berlin premiere.  Recorded in December 1930, before the film, the Kalliope label released the first recording (Kalliope K 321-4) featuring original cast members like Lotte Lenya,  Kurt Gerron (the first Macheath) and Willy Trenk-Trebitsch (Herr Peachum/Street Singer), accompanied by artists like Erika Helmke. The Lewis Ruth orchestra was conducted by Theo Mackeben. Historical Context These 78 RPM shellac recordings are important since they preserve the original "Weimar cabaret" performance style. They feature the gritty, syncopated jazz-dance fusion and the cynical delivery of Bertolt Brecht's lyrics before the Nazi regime banned the creators' works in 1933
