Description

<<60th Anniversary of the Recording>>
Never see one of these early Japanese pressings on IMPULSE so bear with. I am going with the best of my ability..i.e. with my limited knowledge of these rare and early pressings. So please engage your own research and/or knowledge just to be sure. A lovely solid pressing - this really puts it into the sixties...This is the original IMPULSE label design originating from 1960, with deep groove. So, lets just pick up on a couple of the important points on label config. It mentions 'KING RECORD' at the foot. Right at the top [I've done a close-up shot] there's mention of 'AM-PAR'. Now, this is quite telling as this abbreviation [of PARAMOUNT] was discontinued in 1963. So, that is very much indicating a genuine pressing from around the time of release, or soon after. The vinyl comes housed in a fully laminated cover with flipbacks scalloped. This light-blue rear was often employed on Japanese Impulse from this period [mid 60's]. Discogs mentions 1st press should mention album title and artists in English - as this cover does. Again - I'll leave it up to experts in this field to do their own research...but I'm laying it out there... what I see....

Vinyl (Vg+/Ex-) In great condition and has only seen reasonably light use. Under close inspection I could only make out a few light marks per side. One tiny mark does sound briefly [see detail].. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly NEAREXCELLENT level of playback on Side 1. I am detecting nothing more than what I would describe as 'light presence' occasionally in the quieter percussive moments [Side 1]. Side 2 exhibits a bit of light background occasionally, in 'Brown Book', but NOTHING upfront or unpalatable [and a couple of minor ticks]. It's just not playing quite as clean as elsewhere on the record, here. This is really the only track on the whole album you could even vaguely describe as being slightly off the pace [and still very appealing all the same!]. I also noticed a couple of clicks and pops right toward the end of 'Angelica' [literally last couple of bars]. But otherwise it is playing up around NEAR EXCELLENT. You can tell a mile off that a recording like this is a bit special. Fidelity is impressive to say the least. Just be sure you can handle the issues in Brown Book. Otherwise, we're talking a fantastic rendition.
Cover (Ex-) A good clean and unworn front with minimal creasing. The rear looks really good too with just a touch of surface damage to the middle top flipback. Seems to have avoided much of the original ageing process. Minor edge wear and sharp firm openings. Spine is 98% intact.
