This week features a really nice curated slab of rare, original Rock / Country / AOR SSW oriented lps from rare private presses like the 1982 Damascus Road "I Am A Light" lp, the extremely rare top shelf tax scam grail Jason - S/T 1977 on Manilla, original classics like the first US 1971 Black Sabbath - "Paranoid", the incredible 1972 Kama Sutra Dust - "Hard Attack", a rare promo 1971 copy on Kapp of "Budgie" (the debut album!), a completely unknown rare SSW / Folk lp by John K. Brief Comments: The follow-up album, (by arguably the first American Heavy Metal band) "Dust", although ground-breaking, the first record flopped, but Kama Sutra (apart of "Buddah Records") was legendary for knowing something great when they heard it, and by the early 70's had enough money to allow for another chance, so Kenny Aaronson, Marc Bell, Richie Wise, and producer Kenny Kerner went back to the studio, and developed a truly remarkable sophistication, building off sonically, lyrically, from the first self-titled release, into something that further developed, distinguished their heavy metal sound. I have both albums, and I think this one shows a maturation, a growth that is organic, having that sort of backing by the label, complete creative freedom (everything they did was original matierial), and with Sabbath's "Paranoid", Budgie from across the pond picking up American steam, what seemed like a public ready for Dust. It seems intentional they didn't go with singles for this album (the two attempts from the first album both flopped) they were an album band, but it wouldn't be hard for an amateur with significant interest in music, to pick out what could have been singles from this one, which is to say, the album hits, and the "hits" are there, there was enough prescience to realize the burgeoning genre was going to be an album oriented one, (which is probably why the misleading "prog" gets attached, if by progressive you mean literally cutting-edge rock, than yes, that is true!), even the choice of cover, font, you can see impact Dust would have stylistically, in some ways there first two albums, were like what the Velvet Underground's first album was, but to young teens in the 70's, who would form Heavy Metal proper in the years to come. Maybe one part, is Kama Sutra was the label of nice, mellow rock/pop like Ocean (I also dig that album), The Lovin' Spoonful, Brewer & Shipley Stories, Sha Na Na, etc. and yes they had the Flaming Groovies (for two albums, before a hiatus, then later on Sire), Exuma (slightly different audience, genre, ultimately weren't commercially successful enough), they had the US distribution for Three Man Army's - Third Of A Lifetime (but not any subsequent release),  some excellent one-off's with Hackamore Brick's insanely obscure 1971 lp, Gunhill Road 1972 lp, Chet Nichols psychedelic SSW masterpiece "Time Loop", the Nickel Bag 1968 psych lp.....all flopped.....but it was especially Charlie Daniels move to the label, the success of Stories, Sha Na Na, and tons of charting 45's of pop that kept Kama Sutra alive, it just wasn't known by the listening public despite their attempts to do eclectic releases. 
No singles, however good an idea it seemed, maybe contributed (although evidence suggests it wouldn't have mattered), and the label did put their money in helping to get this album made, but they had to focus attention on developing Stories, Charlie Daniels, while keeping an eye on the roster of MOR charting singles, to be able to be a kind of a label that would take chances. Kama Sutra even got Dust a string section, only contributing, to the foreboding cutting-edge uniquely American metal sound they were pioneering. (Walk In The Soft Rain, a great cut, could have been a hit, on B-Side sureshot, it shows a kind of sonic depth, that say Metallica showed on "Orion"). 
What really seemed to be the case, is they couldn't gain traction, radio stations weren't playing them, and as loyal, dedicated as the fans they had cultivated truly word of mouth, from the first album, who did buy, love, study, this one, wasn't sufficient on a meaningful commercial level. Marc Bell, aka Marky Ramone, would go on first to the rare heavy hard rock one-off 1973 "Estus" s/t lp on Columbia, and then beginning with Road To Ruin, the Ramones, yes he's the drummer for the Ramones (he ended up having a good landing!), Kenny Aaronson would play on Exuma's "Reincarnation", "Life" lp's on Kama Sutra, eventually landing steady with Rick Derringer's "Derringer", and finally Richie Wise, guitarist, and producer Kenny Kerner would subsequently go on to produce the first two albums by Kiss (!) Strange each member would go on to fairly high levels of subsequent success.......
But on the shelf of virtually every member of an American Heavy Metal Band, that would form after, contributing much to the sonic, lyric, and aesthetic aspect, was Black Sabbath, and both copies of Dust's lps. They had extremely deep cult status, just not enough to sustain a label act back in the day. All members have done incredible work, on very iconic, and popular pieces, but they've always been proud that people kept Dust alive, enough to be reissued by Performance in the mid-80's stateside, and Back Bone, then Repertoire in Germany in the mid to late 1980's, influencing a whole new generation, the venerable Akarma would reissue both lp's as well, and they have kept being reissued. 
Their impact as a whole on Heavy Metal while informative, has not yet been exhaustive, the more we look, and find out, the more we see, they are apart of the DNA of the genre, a sense that continues to grow. Definitely one of the hardest albums to let go of, it's amazing, I can't say highly enough of the whole lp ("Ivory" an instrumental, funk meets metal, is one I've played for crate diggers a long time now, got my Meters fam into this album that way!)
Both lp's are incredible, I love them equally, I think this may be their most mature, well-rounded, well-executed album, it's raw, but the kind of raw, where you've tamed a lion, but that lion has claws, and will rip on command! [I always felt "How Many Horses" would have been great for a Bojack Horseman montage.....tell Raphael or Ms. Hanawalt! IDK, maybe they'll do a montage for YouTube or something)

*Tariffs aren't going to impact used vinyl records / music media, we wish they were never in place at all, so for international buyers, don't worry on that account!
For our record grading, we stand by the merits outlined in the scale below, anything VG or below will have a detailed explanation in brackets next to the grade.
For sleeves, we will mention anytime there is split, or defect not visible in the photos in brackets next to the grade, otherwise we refer to the photos for the merit of the grade. Of course any questions, concerns, are always welcome :) 
Our media grading scale is as follows: [*Quick note, our VPI is still in storage on the other side of the US, we do brush clean many  items carefully, but we have to prioritize, we won't leave anyone stranded with a filthy record, only "filthy" good! We don't factor dust particles into the grading]
NM = Essentially a pristine album, like new, rarely used.
EX = Under bright light if there is any scuffs or mark, which will be inaudible, most collectors and sellers would tend to consider it closer to NM, EX is also the grade others might call VG++ under the same level of conservative scrutiny.
VG+ = More then a small handful of scuffs, light marks, nothing feelable, will have high-gloss, a thoroughly enjoyable copy that may only have tiny moments of barely perceptible surface noise overpowered by the music. Our VG+ will satisfy the vast majority of collectors as a nice keeper copy, as collector's ourselves for nearly two decades, this grade is aimed to be a great keeper. Note if say the record has a light DNAP warp, but otherwise is NM, we will automatically put it to VG+ and detail that. Another scenario is if a copy plays at a solid EX, but visually is VG, the composite grade will be VG+, and detailed as such.
VG = More hairlines, more marks, maybe a few visible scratches, no more then two feelable scratches (which automatically lowers to VG-), there likely will be surface noise, but will play through, still being an enjoyable copy, the audio quality will satisfy most collector's (the golden rule: if it doesn't satisfy us, it won't be VG), if a record is otherwise EX, but has a slight momentary skip, where 99% of the record is EX, we will note that, and put it at VG. Usually will retain a nice gloss.
VG- = More Scratches than VG, surface noise will jump out more, it be overpowered for longer stretches, or compete with the music in places, it will likely play all the way through on most turntables, a copy that you can still get a decent play enjoyment from.
G+ = Lots of scratches, deeper ones, surface noise now mostly overpowers or competes with the music. It may skip in some places. We don't tend to sell G+ copies, unless the rarity is so great, and that will be precisely detailed.
Thrashed = Pretty much a "Theoretical Grade" for us, it be for all intents & purposes virtually unplayable, it would be for display purposes, or perhaps if you needed the cover but not the record. It's "theoretical" because so far we haven't sold or identified anything intended to sell at this bottom level.

We have it set to 5 day shipping / handling time, as a just in case, typically about 98.7% of our orders are shipped out the day of payment (first day the post office is open), with the vast majority being the second day. We'll message on the extraordinary off-chance if doesn't go out on Tuesday (our auctions mostly ending on Saturdays, Sundays), with the reason and day it will go out, so far that's only happened once on a giant order, and all was well.
