Description
Dyoxen. First Among Equals. Active Records(FV-41476). 1984. UK Import.
Dyoxen were the second band to try something outside the box on Canadian soil after Voivod, their debut demo released in the distant 1987. Not the dazzling display of technicality yet, this early effort still hinted at the guys’ intentions on residing within the more serious parametres, those that required bigger musical dexterity. And the band had what it took for the purpose as evident from the album reviewed here although by the time it saw the light of day the Canadian scene had grown considerably with technical/progressive thrash practitioners available freely like Savage Steel, Overthrow, Annihilator, Disciples of Power, etc.
Still, the band had no reasons to worry about being sidelined by the others as their only foray into the arena is excelllent technical speed/thrash echoing other similar recordings like Toxik’s “World Circus”, Mystrez’s “The Indictment”, Paralysis’ “Arctic Sleep” and Narcotic Greed’s “Fatal”. The title-track is an acrobatic display of guitar wizardry, and at some stage the listener may think that he/she has come across a hidden gem from the Shrapnel catalogue; for nearly 7-min the guys manage to sustain the high level of musicianship providing myriads of time and tempo changes along the way, the only pullback being the vocalist whose not very attached mid-ranged, semi-clean timbre doesn’t possess the required pathos to stand out on a melting musical showdown like that. “The Essence of Ignorance” continues to bedazzle with a portion of brisk fast-paced pyrotechnics also serving a more relaxed mid-tempo break and a striking melodic lead section. “Citizen Soldier” follows a similar hyper-active path with melodic decorations amply provided from both the lead and the riff department, also reflected in a short balladic “idyll” in the second half. “Holocaust (Fall in Grace)” is a great short intricate lasher which packs a pleiad of inventive, technical riffage and less ordinary configurations on a psychedelic crossover base within mere 3-min.
