Up for auction is a rare one-sided E. Berliner's Gramophone Record from the 1890s--
Berliner 63 - "All Coons Look Alike To Me" as performed by the Schollische Military Band, Washington D.C.
Dated May 27, 1897)
Handwritten/etched with name of artist and date.
Note on this record---
As a historic piece, this record -- an instrumental military band rendition of this ragtime/minstrel tune is just that---historic.
The author of the song was an African-American by the name of Ernest Hogan, who later recoiled and was embarrassed at having written one of the songs that helped to launch the style of minstrel song known as "coon song" into the public , which helped feed into an awful and dehumanizing stereotype of black Americans of the time.
History has taught man many sobering lessons. Unfortunately a black man trying to get work in songwriting had to go through some hoops just to get some notoriety, even if it wasn't quite the idea of what that man probably envisioned when he set out to write songs.
I am offering this up with many other rare US distributed and manufactured Berliner recordings from the 1890s.

Condition:
I have listened to the record. There is a 10 second portion of the record that skips, which is a deteriorated chip of the playing area (wood-like center core of record is exposed)
As with all Berliner's - there is obviously some surface noise and level of hiss.
As with most Berliner's from the 1890s, this one shows small scratches, scuffing, handling and some groove wear. There are some small indentations or what may be called 'dimples' in the grooves. Again, this is pretty common wear for these records.
I have been a collector for many years now and have carefully cleaned all of the discs to the best of my ability, however---you may choose to give it another cleaning -- as a record of this vintage may need it. Please see photos for more detail.

German-American inventor Emile Berliner invented the first circular, non-cylinder, playing discs with recorded sound in the late 1880s. These fairly flat-edged black, circular platter-like discs are more commonly known as records.
By 1895 he had financing available for the E. Berliner's Gramophone Company, which produced the discs from 1895-1899.
These historic recordings, which are now over 115-years old or near that age-- are considered extremely rare and collectible, with some being one-of-a-kind recordings due to the process in which they were primitively recorded and duplicated.
