Label/Format: Pye (International) – original black and blue format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. One long fine one on side one only shows under angled light.

Cat Number: NSPL 28138.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 148 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Very Rare, make no mistake. In cricketing terms, this did not trouble the scorers and sold virtually zilch. Rare seen or offered, this is a real UK Pye obscurity and quite honestly, I am surprised it even got a British release.

Brief Info: A one-off album by Eagle, a short-lived band formed from the pseudo-psychedelic Beacon Street Union, an equally short-lived unit. Melodic, guitar rock with a hint of country but a commercial flop and sinking without trace. Actually a pretty good album but few would have even heard of it – mention Eagle and most all will think ‘Eagles’, the US super-country rock act of the 1970s. But this singular Eagle has nothing to do with them. If any collector is seeking this obscure Pye rarity, well this is a very fine copy, the cover has some edge wear but the record looks and plays like new. Another one from that collection of barely played records and the original cover stickers gives clues to this being another ‘lost’ album from the bargain bin back in the early 1970s.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) with most wear on the edges. A single, very thin format with no lamination. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: This immensely wear-prone front has little really, light minor rub traces to the very black artwork and some very fine spine hairline creases. Any creasing away from the edges is light, few and mild. The lack of ringwear is remarkable with a heavy thick record inside for 40 years. You can imagine what most of these will look like these days. The most eye-catching thing are two original price stickers: The top right is the original asking price in decimal and pre-decimal currency. This being available right on the brink of the changeover from LSD to decimal. The prices shown are 1-1-11 (£1.99 1/2), an old halfpenny off £2. The other is a reduced price sticker of £1, the shop was Invicta Co-Op. I have made no effort to remove this vintage price stickers, and why would I want too? These are part of this album’s history and better left alone (the risk to the fragile cover’s surface would be immensely anyway). Overall a very nice front cover, never even seen this before and finding it better will prove difficult.

Cover Back: The back is even better: a little spine edge rubbing encroaches, but apart from a very few faint surface creases, there is little else to fault. How many of these will ever avoid ringwear?, this is incredible.

Top Edge: Moderate, consistent rubbing to this edge. The black is now gone and bare card is now seen but this is far away from going through.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: A little thickened when viewed end-on but no real feathering, no trimming of course. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but fragile and thin, quite straight, maybe a little compression possible. A little patchy rubbing and some text characters have eroded. The bottom final inch is white which I think looks correct in this case as it’s so sharp and precise.

Corners: All have rubbed in context to their respective edge. But all retain decent shape.

Cover Summary: An elusive and heavily wear-prone cover. Most here present on the edges with the main faces being little affected and attractive, this obscure Pye cover should please many collectors but clearly not the more discerning this time.

The Inner: The original is around VG, a couple of tear around the window rim have been repaired by me the best I can. Okay, I could find another inner I guess, but this is the genuine original it came with and I prefer to keep it with its record even though it has sustained a little damage. The lining is intact and all edges unsplit. It has the same style sticker on one corner as the main cover, clearly the shop’s ID or price coding system.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), the cover may be a little down on my normal levels, but the record looks and plays almost like new. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat ‘lost’ Pye record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing – I don’t think a cleaner, better example will ever be offered on Ebay. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. How many of these were issued I have no idea, but very few I would be sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly little and carefully handled when done so. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lesser-known record. This copy will nigh-on impossible to find better and the record itself can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
