The nine tracks come together as a thematic suite. Accenting Carlson’s low-key guitar and Smith’s simplistic drumming (sometimes as faint as the pulse of a dying man) are bass, pedal and lap steel, trombone, and tubular bells. Put together, they paint a picture of hard living on the open plains, of dry winds heralding bad times, of sacrifice and redemption and all the other things that make Westerns so badass. Hex is an impressive piece of work. It’s an engrossing album, poetic in nature, and it stays with you after it ends. Not many acts can deliver on such an emotional level. This is essential. ~Highly Recommended!
