The production is a bit flat, but the musical qualities more than make up for it. The band, not exactly known for a stable lineup consisted of Dave Arbus on violin and flute, Ron Caines on sax, Geoff Nicholson on vocals and guitar, Steve York on bass, and Dave DuFont on drums. It's interesting to note that Dave Arbus also played violin on the Who's classic "Baba O'Reilly", so that gave him way more exposure through just that song than ever East of Eden. The band released Mercator Projected on the Deram label (a label best known for the Moody Blues, not to mention Cat Stevens getting his start there). To me, I think this is much more interesting than the Moody Blues, especially with the exotic Middle Eastern psychedelic vibe. And they're also much more adventurous as well! The album starts off with "Northern Hemisphere", where the band venture more in the hard rock territory, before getting more exotic with "Isadora", and the laid-back "Waterways". "Centaur Woman" is the band exploring the blues, with Ron Caines, rather than Geoff Nicholson handling the vocals - and if you enjoy bass solos, there's a cracker on this track. "Bathers" is the cut that most reminds me of the Moody Blues, but with East of Eden's exotic stamp. "Moth" is another late '60s psychedelic number, complete with phasing (no doubt inspired by "I Am the Walrus"), and the last cut, "In the Stable of the Sphinx" is a wonderful instrumental piece showing the band's best qualities. While the 1960s is stuffed with overrated and over-hyped albums, this is truly one of my favorites from that decade.
