EAST OF EDEN "SNAFU" 1976 stereo LP (Deram) SL-285. MINT! Exact reissue Japanese pressing of the RARE 1970 UK Prog Rock LP. 8 Jazz influenced tracks (with a touch of Bluebeat) that pre-dates their "Jig A Jig" single. All tracks feature great violinist/flautist Dave Arbus. Complete w/MINT lyrics insert in Japanese & English.
East of Eden were an eclectic UK Progressive Rock unit hailing from Brighton. “Snafu” was their second album released in 1970, a year after “Mercator Projected”. It reached #29 in the British album charts. Rarely has such a non-commercial LP been so successful. The group under the leadership of multi-instrumentalist Dave Arbus, was formed in 1968. After a one-off single for Atlantic, they signed with Decca's progressive imprint Deram for 2 albums. At times they played straight Progressive Rock, sounding somewhat akin to Jethro Tull but their influences were more far-ranging- taking in Jazz (especially John Coltrane & Charles Mingus) & early Bluebeat or Ska (an early forerunner of Reggae). Another influence had not yet surfaced- that of C&W music, as witnessed by the instrumental hit “Jig A Jig” later in the year. That non-LP #7 single colored their subsequent work for Harvest in the 1970's. Dave Arbus had a distinctive style on violin but was also adept on flute, trumpet & tenor sax. The rest of the band consisted of Ron Caines (alto sax, tenor sax & piano), Geoff Nicholson (guitar), Andy Sneddon (bass) & Geoff Britton (drums). “Snafu” is primarily instrumental but there are a few songs with vocals & spoken word passages. Highlights are “Ramadhan” (a Top Five hit in France), “Gum Arabic” & the 2 Ken Drummond Bluebeat songs “Marcus Junior” & “Confucius”. Often referred to as a more serious version of the Mothers of Invention. Produced by David Hitchcock.

MINT cover has virtually no wear & looks nearly new w/no tears or writing. MINT record reproduces the U.K. red & white Deram logos. It has no scratches or scuffs & has received very few plays. Complete w/11" x 11" b&w lyric insert in Japanese & English in MINT condition. Marked "1976 King Record Co., Ltd./Made In Japan" in small print along the bottom of the back cover. There is no OBI strip present.
