Description
The NEW ORLEANS RHYTHM KINGS (billed as the "Friar's Society Orchestra") come charging hard out of the gate with their first recording (August 29, 1922), "ECCENTRIC." Also known as "Eccentric Rag," this tune is a romp and a half, with blazing ensemble, breaks and solos by PAUL MARES (cornet), GEORGE BRUNIES (trombone), LEON RAPPOLO (clarinet), JACK PETTIS (tenor sax), LOU BLACK (banjo), ARNOLD LOCOYANO (inaudible bass), and FRANK SNYDER (drums).
This performance seems a good year-and-a-half ahead of the times, more like 1924 than 1922, but it's only to be expected from this band of hip white guys from New Orleans, who after all, were in the very vanguard of jazz.
The flip side is also pretty terrific, by HUSK O'HARE'S SUPER ORCHESTRA OF CHICAGO, in their rendition of "SAN." This is the premiere performance of that well-known jam tune, and a pretty good one at that.
This original 1922 Gennett 5009 is in V++ condition on "Eccentric," light wear, a few scratches; VV- condition on "San," with heavier wear, blasting in places. "Eccentric" is the side you'll play again and again, anyhow!
